Oppdatering på thai baht.

Analysts concerned as Thai baht grows stronger
Published on March 21, 2013 by TFP   ·   No Comments

BANGKOK, 20 March 2013 (NNT)-The Thai Baht has become strongest in 16 years, quoted at 29.13 Baht against the US dollar today, which, according to an analyst, has led to massive sales of the greenback offshore and brought down the SET index by 47 points.

CIMB Bank (Thailand) Assistant President Banluesak has expressed his view that the Thai Baht has strengthened too quickly. He urged the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Thailand (BoT) to collect foreign currency transaction taxes( Tobin Tax) as a way of keeping the influx of foreign capital under control. He said the Thai Baht is now the strongest currency in the region.

It has been reported that as the Thai currency has risen to its highest level against the greenback, stock investors have begun to unload their shares, forcing the stock index to plunge 47 points and gold price to decline by 150 baht. Mr Thiti Tantikulanan, Head of Capital Markets Business Division, KASIKORNBANK, has disclosed that the influx of foreign capital shows no sign of abating as foreign investors continue to invest in the Thai bond market, with the current foreign holding in Thai bonds reported at 810 billion baht, the highest in the market history.

However, the majority of those investors are not investing in the industrial sector but rather taking advantage of the stronger Baht. Mr. Thiti predicted that the BoT might impose short term measures to curb the influx.

Kommentar:

Thailand’s Baht Declines Most in a Week on Rate-Cut Speculation

Thailand’s baht dropped the most in more than a week on speculation the central bank will cut interest rates next week to slow fund inflows that helped fuel a 2.3 percent rally in the currency this year. Bonds fell.

Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong said Jan. 25 that lower borrowing costs would discourage inflows into the country, urging the central bank to employ measures to prevent the baht from rising or falling sharply. There’s concern the strong baht will hurt tourism and exports, he said Jan. 31. The Bank of Thailand will review interest rates on Feb. 20.

“There’s some pressure from the Thai government on the central bank to cut interest rates next week,” said Kozo Hasegawa, a foreign-exchange trader at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. in Bangkok. “Still, because of the Chinese New Year holidays, trading is quiet.”

The baht fell 0.2 percent to 29.89 per dollar as of 3:18 p.m. in Bangkok, the biggest decline since Jan. 31, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. One-month implied volatility, a measure of expected moves in exchange rates used to price options, was unchanged at 5.47 percent.

Global investors bought $1.2 billion more local sovereign notes than they sold this month through Feb. 8, Thai Bond Market Association data show. Overseas shipments, which account for about two-thirds of Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, rose 14 percent in December after a 27 percent increase the previous month, official data showed on Jan. 31.
